Cerebrospinal Fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid (liquor cerebrospinalis) is a clear fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. It performs a number of important functions:

  1. Protects the central nervous system from mechanical damage, softening shocks and shocks.

  2. Nourishes nerve tissue by delivering nutrients and removing metabolic waste.

  3. Maintains constant pressure and volume inside the skull.

  4. Participates in the immunological protection of the nervous system, contains lymphocytes and antibodies.

  5. Serves as a transport medium for hormones and neurotransmitters.

Cerebrospinal fluid is produced in the ventricles of the brain from blood plasma. It circulates in the ventricular system and then enters the subarachnoid space around the brain and spinal cord through the openings.

Examination of cerebrospinal fluid (lumbar puncture) is widely used in the diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system.
