Sterilization

  1. Sterilization is a surgical operation or any other method that results in sterility in males and females. In women, operations such as hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy (surgical removal of both ovaries) are a 100% guarantee of sterility for the rest of your life. Another way to achieve sterilization in women is to remove the fallopian tubes (salpingectomy) and/or divide and tie them. These operations can be performed either through the abdominal cavity or through the vagina. One of the modern methods of sterilization (tubal occlusion) consists of completely blocking the inner (lower) half of the fallopian tube using a laparoscope. To do this, they usually use Hulk-Clemens or Filshi clamps, or a small plastic Falop ring. Male sterilization is usually done through a vasectomy.

  2. Sterilization also means the process of destroying all microorganisms (including spores). This is achieved by exposure to heat, radiation, chemicals or through filtration. An autoclave is often used for sterilization.
