Umbilical fistula

An umbilical orifice fistula is a pathological canal connecting the abdominal cavity through the umbilical ring with the external environment. Typically, fistulas occur in the navel area or along its edges, but they can form anywhere on the body. They are a winding narrow canal with branched processes and come in different lengths - from a few millimeters to several centimeters. Fistulas can cause not only external cosmetic defects, but also serious health problems, such as infectious diseases, inflammation and hernias.

The reasons for the formation of fistulas can be different. These are: surgical interventions; injuries; infections; exposure to other factors such as radiation, chemical treatments, smoking, pregnancy and others. Only a specialist can identify the causes of a fistula by conducting a detailed examination.

Symptoms of a fistula are pain, discharge with an unpleasant odor, swelling and redness of the skin around the navel. If a fistula causes serious health problems or personal hygiene problems, you should consult a doctor immediately. Treatment of a fistula includes surgery, as well as the use of antibiotics, antiseptics and other medications.

An umbilical fistula is not a cosmetic defect. It may be accompanied by significant infections. The causes of fistula can be: infection; tissue rupture; immunity disorders. Diagnosis and treatment of fistula is carried out by surgeons. Since the fistula is located in the abdominal cavity, the patient requires surgery. In the process, the cystic element is excised along with the membranes. Then it is removed using drainage.
