Tibiofibular Ligament Posterior

Posterior tibiofibular ligament (lig. tibiobulare posterior, PNA, BNA, JNA), or posterior ankle ligament, is a ligament of a paired structure of the tendons of the peroneal muscles and fibula, strengthening the posterior part of the ankle joint and pulling the lateral part of the foot back and inward.

The tibiofibular ligament, the posterior one, is covered at the back by a connective tissue sheath containing the posterior medial intermuscular septum; inferiorly and anteriorly, it is limited anteriorly by the apex of the fibular tuberosity and laterally by the surface of the fibrous layer of the fibular bone. The outer edge of the ligament is connected to the lateral surface of the interosseous ligament, and the inner edge is connected to the interosseous membrane and interlobar ligament. One end of the ligament is thickened and forms the head of the lateral malleolus, which is attached to the anterior edge of the talus (respectively, to the surface of the third heel point).

Lateral to the posterior tibiofibular ligament, below is the anterior tibiofibular ligament, which takes part in strengthening the ankle joints and has a similar structure.
