Gastric tetany is a state of increased neuromuscular excitability, manifested by skeletal muscle cramps, caused by hypocalcemia.
Reasons for the development of gastric tetany:
-
Vitamin D deficiency and insufficient dietary calcium intake.
-
Impaired absorption of calcium in the gastrointestinal tract with gastritis, gastric ulcer, enterocolitis.
-
Increased need for calcium during pregnancy and lactation.
-
Kidney failure.
Clinical manifestations:
-
Increased excitability of the neuromuscular system.
-
Cramps of skeletal muscles, most often the muscles of the face, hands, and feet.
-
Convulsions of the diaphragm with a feeling of lack of air.
-
Nausea, vomiting.
-
Increased heart rate, increased blood pressure.
Diagnosis is based on identifying hypocalcemia.
Treatment: replenishment of calcium deficiency with calcium supplements, vitamin D, normalization of calcium absorption in the intestines.
