Tetany gastric

Gastric tetany is a state of increased neuromuscular excitability, manifested by skeletal muscle cramps, caused by hypocalcemia.

Reasons for the development of gastric tetany:

  1. Vitamin D deficiency and insufficient dietary calcium intake.

  2. Impaired absorption of calcium in the gastrointestinal tract with gastritis, gastric ulcer, enterocolitis.

  3. Increased need for calcium during pregnancy and lactation.

  4. Kidney failure.

Clinical manifestations:

  1. Increased excitability of the neuromuscular system.

  2. Cramps of skeletal muscles, most often the muscles of the face, hands, and feet.

  3. Convulsions of the diaphragm with a feeling of lack of air.

  4. Nausea, vomiting.

  5. Increased heart rate, increased blood pressure.

Diagnosis is based on identifying hypocalcemia.

Treatment: replenishment of calcium deficiency with calcium supplements, vitamin D, normalization of calcium absorption in the intestines.
