Thyrostatic Agents

Thyrostatic drugs are a group of drugs that suppress the synthesis of thyroid hormones.

Thyrostatics affect the thyroid gland by inhibiting the activity of thyroid hormones that are produced by the thyroid gland. They can be used to treat various diseases such as hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, Graves' disease and others.

Some of the most common thyreostatic agents include mercaptopurine, propylthiouracil, thiamazole, and potassium perchlorate. These medications are used to control the levels of thyroid hormones in the body, which may help improve symptoms associated with thyroid disease.

However, when using thyreostatic drugs, it is necessary to take into account possible side effects, such as anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and others. In addition, these drugs may interact with other medications, so you should consult your doctor before starting treatment.

Thyroid Hormones The thyroid glands are a pair of endocrine glands located in the front of the neck that produce the two main thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). These hormones control metabolism and cell growth; they are also essential for brain and cardiovascular development. Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid glands, which consist of two pyramidal lobes connected by the base of bones: the thyroid gland and the parathyroid gland. They also produce calcitonin, a hormone that controls calcium levels in the blood.

Thyroid drugs work by increasing the activity of thyroid enzymes, which control the production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. They are often used to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. These medications are also used in the treatment of hyperparathyroidism, which causes elevated blood calcium levels. They can also be used for replacement therapy after removal of the thyroid gland.

One of the best known examples is tyrosol, a drug used to treat excess secretion of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. It suppresses thyroid hormone synthesis and can be used to normalize thyroid hormone levels in people with thyroid problems. Other drugs used to treat thyroid problems include propylthiouracil and amiodarone.
