Estuary of the Inferior Vena Cava

The ostium of the inferior vena cava (ostium venae cavae inferioris) is the place where the inferior vena cava connects to the venous system of the body. It is one of the largest veins in the human body and is located in the lower abdomen, next to the kidneys and bladder.

The opening of the inferior vena cava is shaped like a funnel, which opens into the lower abdomen. Its walls contain valves that help blood flow back to the heart. In addition, the mouth of the inferior vena cava is surrounded by numerous veins, which also participate in blood circulation.

The inferior vena cava collects blood from the lower extremities, pelvis, pelvic organs, and lower abdomen. It passes through the liver, where the blood is filtered and toxins are removed. It then continues its journey to the heart, where the blood mixes with other venous flows and returns to the right atrium.

Malfunction of the inferior vena cava can lead to various diseases, such as varicose veins, thrombosis, thrombophlebitis and others. Therefore, it is important to monitor the condition of this vein and undergo regular medical examinations.
