Vein Azygos Left

The azygos vein (Latin: vena azygos; Greek: οθυος κεφαλαίας) is the term for the left terminal venous system that drains into the left azygos (Greek: o θυος ασινδρούς) or superior vena cava. Other names that are often used to describe this vein are azygos, otylosa, and indeterminate vessels. As a result of certain lesions in this system, a negative hemodynamic effect may occur, which is expressed in vasoconstriction, hemodilution



The azygos vein is a large vein formed from the connection of the left and right venous plexuses, as well as from the corresponding thoracic duct. This vessel leaves the thoracic cavity at the level of the third thoracic vertebra. From the latter, additional branches are formed, diverging along the course of the vein itself or the organs and tissues surrounding it.
