Wertheim's Hysterectomy

Wertheim's Hysterectomy is a radical surgical operation consisting of complete removal of the uterus along with the appendages, the upper third of the vagina, the uterosacral ligaments and regional lymph nodes.

The operation is performed for cervical cancer that has spread to the uterus itself and surrounding tissues. The goal of the operation is to completely remove the tumor along with potential pathways of metastasis to prevent recurrence of the disease as much as possible.

Wertheim's hysterectomy was proposed by Austrian surgeon Ernst Wertheim in 1898 and remains the gold standard for surgical treatment of invasive cervical cancer. This extensive operation requires a highly qualified surgeon and anesthesiologist and is accompanied by significant blood loss and a high risk of complications. However, Wertheim's hysterectomy, when performed correctly, offers the best chance of completely curing patients of cervical cancer.
