What is epiglottitis?

**Epiglottitis** is an acute disease of the oropharynx (larynx), in which the epiglottis and nearby tissues responsible for breathing (trachea, bronchi) become inflamed. The disease is also called infectious suffocation, since in the acute period it is difficult to even swallow food, and the breathing process is often disrupted. The sick person develops a fever, swelling of the throat, dark circles appear under the eyes, and pain occurs. Sometimes there are changes in the oral mucosa and lymph nodes in the neck. Children, adolescents and adults can get this disease, regardless of gender and age.
