Zyuznik European

European Zyuznik: description, application and healing properties

European grasshopper (lat. Lycopus europaeus) is a perennial plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It grows in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, on ditches and banks of ponds. Zyuznik is found in nature in the form of a plant with a tetrahedral, branched stem at the top. Zyuznik leaves are opposite, oblong-lanceolate, serrate. The upper leaves are sessile, and the lower ones have petioles. If the grasshopper grows in water, then its leaves immersed in water are pinnately dissected. Small, white, funnel-shaped flowers of the grasshopper have a 4-part corolla with purple specks in the throat and on the lip. Zyuznik blooms from July to September.

European sage is used as a medicinal plant. The aerial parts of the plant are collected during flowering, then tied into bunches and dried in a ventilated area. The active ingredients of zyuznik are tannins, glycosides, some resins and essential oil. One of the active ingredients of the sage (presumably a derivative of caffeic acid - lithospermic acid) makes this medicinal plant healing for relatively mild forms of hyperfunction of the thyroid gland. This substance probably reduces the excitability of the thyroid gland and at the same time counteracts the excess of its hormone.

The use of European sage in medicine is especially helpful in cases of cardiac dysfunction (cardiac neuroses) caused by hyperfunction of the thyroid gland. This is recognized by the German National Health Service. The use of tea from zyuznik is not very popular. They mainly use an extract from this plant, which is sold in pharmacies under the name Thyreogutt (an extract from a mixture of equal parts of motherwort and sage).

Zyuznik European is also used in homeopathy. The corresponding remedy is called Lycopus virginieus. It is prepared from the North American virginiana, very close to the European one, and is used almost exclusively for cardiac disorders (cardiac neuroses) caused by hyperfunction of the thyroid gland. In dilution D1, the drug is taken 5-10 drops 2-3 times a day.

Features of the use of European sage in folk medicine have not been highlighted. However, it can be used, like motherwort, as a mild sedative for cardiac neuroses. With normal dosage, no side effects are observed.

In conclusion, European sage is a valuable medicinal plant that is widely used in medicine as a remedy for hyperthyroidism and cardiac neuroses. Zyuznik extract is sold in pharmacies and is available to everyone. Despite the fact that jujube is not a widely used plant in folk medicine, its healing properties are undeniable and are recommended for use in corresponding diseases.
