Can cream be carried in hand luggage on an airplane?

People take their usual cosmetics with them on a trip, and bring back cosmetics that are not available in their hometown. Favorite perfumes, lipstick and mascara from famous brands, exotic creams. What and in what quantity can you take into the cabin, and what is better to check in as luggage?

Is it possible to take cosmetics in hand luggage?

Cosmetics are taken in hand luggage, but in limited quantities. The volume of liquid (this includes creams, perfumes, hair care products, emulsions, gels, mousses) should not exceed 1 liter. Moreover, this amount includes all the liquids that you have with you, including drinks and medications.

The volume of bottles is no more than 100 ml. You cannot take with you, for example, a 200 ml bottle of cologne, citing the fact that the cologne itself is left at the bottom.

In total, a passenger can carry no more than 10 bottles in hand luggage. But there are unlimited samples of shampoos, creams, perfumes. They are not considered liquids

Goods that you purchased at Duty-Free, if you have a receipt confirming that the purchase was made on the day of departure, are not included in the total volume of liquids.

What cosmetics can be carried in hand luggage?

All pressed cosmetics are allowed - powder, eye shadow, blush. Creams and other “liquids” in a volume of up to 1 liter. It is recommended to take with you to feel comfortable during the flight:

  1. Wet wipes.
  2. Thermal water.
  3. Moisturizing cream.
  4. A product that softens the skin of the lips, for example, gloss.

In this case, even a long flight in a stuffy cabin will not affect the condition of the skin. It is best to take with you not “full versions” of your favorite cosmetics, but samples. They do not cause any complaints, and they are convenient to use.

Aerosols are prohibited from being carried in hand luggage on almost all airlines. They are checked in as luggage. If the carrier allows you to take the cans with you, then they are small, up to 100 ml. This information is available on the airlines' website. You are allowed to carry up to 2 liters of aerosol in your luggage.

You cannot take into the cabin any sharp metal objects that could theoretically pose a threat to other passengers - nail scissors, nail files, tweezers, even tweezers. Their place is also in luggage.

How to transport cosmetics

It is best to transport cosmetics in a transparent bag with a zipper - it will be convenient to inspect them. You can use a regular office folder - its very appearance will confirm that you have not exceeded the permitted volume.

What should you do if, during inspection, cosmetics were found in your hand luggage that cannot be taken on board the plane? There are three options:

  1. Please check these cosmetics in your luggage.
  2. Send them by mail. There is usually a post office at the airport.
  3. If time is running out, you will have to part with this cosmetics.

When packing items that are intended to be checked in, make sure that all boxes and bottles are hermetically sealed, and that fragile items are surrounded by a soft “airbag”.

Let's sum it up

What rules apply when carrying cosmetics on an airplane:

  1. Pressed substances and liquids (up to 1 liter, per package up to 100 ml) are placed in hand luggage.
  2. For ease of inspection, it is recommended to transport cosmetics in a transparent bag.
  3. Aerosols, cutting and piercing objects (manicure sets) must be checked in as checked baggage.
  4. Please note: the cosmetics that you take with you on the flight should not be prohibited for export from or import into the country.

When packing a cosmetic bag that you will take with you on a flight, it is better to study the rules in advance. Otherwise, you will have to say goodbye to your favorite cream in the security check area. We have collected basic tips for those planning to travel by air:

  1. Most cosmetic products (eg mascara, cream eyeshadow, liquid liner) are considered liquids. You are allowed a total of 1 liter of liquids in your hand luggage. At the same time, liquid substances can only be transported in containers with a volume of no more than 100 ml. If the bottle is designed for 200 ml of liquid, but there is 100, 50 ml or less inside, this option will not work - you will have to empty the container. Considering that the total liquid should be no more than 1 liter, in total you can put only 10 containers of 100 ml each in a travel cosmetic bag.
  2. Bottles with liquids can only be carried in a transparent cosmetic bag or a plastic bag with a zipper.
  3. It is prohibited to have piercing or cutting objects on board the aircraft. Therefore, nail scissors and nail clippers, as well as glass and metal nail files with sharp edges, should be carried in your suitcase.
  4. You can carry unlimited quantities of lipstick sticks, eye and lip pencils, dry eye shadows, loose pigments, dry blushes, bronzers and highlighters, and face powders.

As for skin care, many brands produce products that do not exceed the volume allowed for transportation: for example, Nutritic Intense Riche face creams from La Roche-Posay and Idéalia from Vichy, Prima eye cream from Giorgio Armani, face serum Force C3 from Helena Rubinstein, hand cream Cicaplast Mains from La Roche-Posay. Separately, it should be said about thermal water.

With decorative products that have a liquid or creamy texture, everything is even simpler - they are usually produced in small-volume packaging. For example, you can safely take foundation, BB and CC creams with you: for example, the volume of a bottle of Teint Visionnaire double foundation from Lancôme is 30 ml, the same amount in a tube of NYX Professional Makeup BB cream. Also, feel free to put concealers, mascaras, eyebrow gels, lip glosses and other similar products in your cosmetic bag - the volume of these products, as a rule, does not exceed 12-15 ml.

As for manicure products, they are also suitable for carry-on luggage. Nail polishes usually have a volume of 7 to 15 ml, the same goes for nail care products. For example, Essie's Apricot Cuticle Oil comes in a 13.5 ml bottle.

Personal hygiene items and cosmetics are an integral part of any passenger's bag. But transporting them on board an airplane, and even more so in hand luggage, is only possible if you follow all safety rules.

What can be carried in the cabin

The term cosmetics refers to all products that are used to care for the body, hair, mouth, and nails. They come in liquid, solid, gaseous and powder form.

Carry-on luggage may contain any cosmetics, except explosive and flammable ones. For example, deodorant sprays that are in high-pressure cans must be checked in luggage. Any products that are aerosols are not allowed into the salon. Nail polish remover containing acetone will also not be allowed through.

To ensure flight safety, airlines have strict rules regarding the transportation of liquids. The permissible volume of a container with liquid contents for transportation in the cabin does not exceed 100 ml. The number of such containers is no more than 10 units, i.e. a total of 1 liter. Anything in excess of the established limit will simply not be allowed through by airport security.

Liquid substances include: gel, cream, shampoo, scrub, mascara, liquid lipstick, balm, etc.

Samples with cream, mask, gel, shampoo are not limited in quantity.

Thus, you can place the following in your hand luggage:

  4. lipstick, powder, blush;
  5. perfume, eau de toilette;
  6. dry antiperspirants, roll-on deodorants;
  7. toothpaste;
  8. liquid for lenses.

A container larger than 100 ml, even if it is partially filled with liquid, is not allowed in the cabin. The size of tubes, cylinders, jars cannot exceed this parameter. A set for a traveler, consisting of small jars, can be bought in a shopping center or ordered in an online store.

What is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage

The 100 milliliter law does not apply to cosmetic products purchased at Duty Free. The main thing is that you have a receipt confirming the purchase, and all items are sealed.

It is important to remember that some cosmetic instruments are prohibited from being carried in hand luggage.

For example, the length of the tip of nail scissors should be no more than 6 cm. Tweezers, tweezers, and mirrors are allowed, but some airlines may prohibit even them. All piercing and cutting objects are under the close attention of airport staff and can be confiscated if they do not meet safety standards.

It is better to pack cosmetics carried in the cabin in a transparent bag that closes tightly. It is not recommended to use perfumes or eau de toilette on board, as the smell may cause allergic reactions in other passengers.

What to do with prohibited items

What happens to cosmetics that are not allowed in hand luggage? In such cases, security officers offer the passenger several options:

  1. check in as luggage (if permitted);
  2. recycle;
  3. put in a storage room;
  4. give to mourners.

To avoid unpleasant situations, you should familiarize yourself in advance with the requirements for transporting personal belongings on the carrier’s website.

Carrying cosmetics in luggage

Cosmetics that are prohibited from being carried in the cabin can be placed in luggage if their transportation does not violate safety rules.

  1. Products in powder form, pressed shadows, powder, blush can be transported in any quantity.
  2. As for liquid cosmetics, they all have their limitations. It is better to check the permitted volume with the air carrier.

To transport cosmetics safely, you must pack them correctly.

Aerosols, deodorants, and various sprays in cylinders may be completely prohibited for transportation or limited to small quantities - a maximum of 2 liters of total volume and 0.5 liters of one container.

Scissors, files, tongs and the like are allowed to be transported in the luggage compartment.

All cosmetics that are checked in as luggage must be packed tightly; in addition, it is better to put them in resealable bags. This is necessary both to prevent damage to cosmetic accessories and to increase safety.

Baggage weight is usually allowed up to 20 or 30 kg (depending on the airline). If you exceed this norm you will have to pay extra.

Prohibited cosmetics for transportation in the cabin

Many cosmetic items raise doubts among security services and are therefore not allowed for air transportation.. With hand luggage things are even more complicated. It is strictly forbidden to take into the salon:

  1. high-pressure cylinders, such as hairspray;
  2. products containing a flammable substance;
  3. piercing and cutting cosmetic instruments (scissors can be carried if the tip is no more than 6 cm);
  4. liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml.

Find out more about what is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage on an airplane in the video below.

Any cosmetics that are suspected of being toxic or explosive may not be allowed for transportation at all.

What will happen to the violator?

Passengers who violate air transportation rules may bear administrative and even criminal liability. If a violation is detected before boarding the plane, the passenger will be asked to dispose of the prohibited items, give them to a storage room or to the mourners.

In any situation, security officers try to be as loyal and respectful to passengers as possible and offer to resolve all controversial issues peacefully.

Rules for transporting cosmetics on an airplane

For safety reasons, all airlines have their own rules for the transportation of cosmetic products. It also happens that one air carrier allows the transportation of an item, but another does not. Among the general requirements are:

  1. All containers with liquid contents are tightly closed and placed in a strong transparent bag with a zipper.
  2. The total volume of liquids in hand luggage cannot exceed 1 liter.
  3. Aerosols are allowed in checked baggage; they must be intended for household use only. Total volume – 2 l. The volume of one container cannot exceed 0.5 liters. These requirements may vary. Some carriers do not allow any aerosols, cans, or the like on the plane at all.

Before your flight, you should carefully study the rules for transporting cosmetics in hand luggage.

It is important to remember that not all cosmetics can be imported to foreign countries. This is especially true for perfumes.

What you might need on a flight

For a comfortable flight, you will need a minimum set of personal hygiene items, and for girls, also cosmetics. An excellent solution would be samples with creams, gels, perfumes, etc. They will be enough for the duration of the flight, they also take up very little space, and the security service will allow them on board the plane without any problems.

If you can’t get samples, you can purchase a traveler’s kit, which consists of small containers, and place your cosmetics in them.

In the salon it is often necessary:

  1. matting and regular wet wipes;
  2. moisturizing cream;
  3. roll-on deodorant;
  4. powder;
  5. mascara;
  6. pomade;
  7. antibacterial hand gel.

It’s better to take only the essentials to the salon.

Passenger comments

Frequent flyers face different situations at airports and on the plane. Reviews about the requirements for air transportation are both positive and negative, which is quite natural. Most passengers say the following:

  1. When undergoing pre-flight inspection, it is better to comply with all requirements, since, otherwise, the security service has the right to not allow the passenger to board the flight.
  2. Exceeding the limit on the volume of liquids, the presence of explosive substances and sharp objects is indeed very strictly controlled.
  3. Violation of even a minor rule can lead to the most dire consequences.
  4. Airport staff offer a sufficient number of ways to preserve personal items prohibited for transportation instead of recycling.
