The cuticle is a protective zone of the growth part of the nail - the matrix. The aesthetic appearance of the manicure, the health of the nails, and even the state of self-confidence depend on its condition. How to properly care for the skin around the nail, what products and procedures should you take a closer look at when planning not only salon, but also home treatments? Let's look at the most popular and in-demand products for the care and prevention of problematic conditions, such as hangnails and irritations.
What is cuticle
It consists of eponychium - the upper part, and pterygium - the lower layer, which grows to the nail plate and grows with it. How fast does the cuticle grow? A partial update lasts 14 days, and a full update lasts 21 days. It is within these time frames that it is recommended to perform hardware and trim manicures.
Why do you need to take care of your cuticle? Its edge is constantly growing and shedding dead dry cells. Over time, it peels off, cracks, tears, and causes burrs to appear. If an infection is added to this, reddish areas of inflammation appear.
To avoid this problem, it is necessary to take care of the cuticle and nails in a timely manner, take care of nourishing and moisturizing the skin, and remove keratinized dry edges. Let's take a closer look at the basic rules, procedures and cuticle care products. Everything must go together and be carried out systematically.
Care rules, materials and tools
A set of procedures aimed at caring for and maintaining the skin of the hands, cuticles and nails in a healthy and attractive state consists of the following stages:
- Cleansing;
- Hydration;
- Nutrition;
- Masks and wraps;
- Massage;
- Baths;
- Prevention of burrs;
- Measures to slow growth;
- Manicure: hardware, edged and European.
For care you will also need cosmetics, materials and tools, depending on the procedure being performed:
- Moisturizing and nourishing cream;
- Ready-made or homemade massage scrub;
- Paraffin for hot or cold treatments;
- Cuticle oil;
- Grooming pencils as an express method;
- Ready-made masks or ingredients for making at home;
- Ingredients for baths - soap, salt, iodine, aromatic oils, tinctures;
- Medicinal preparations for eliminating inflamed hangnails at home - ointment with silver, Solcoseryl gel, Spasatel balm, Sudocrem;
- Cuticle files - diamond, laser, ceramic;
- Orange sticks or pusher;
- Scissors or wire cutters.
Cleansing
Before performing any procedures for caring for the skin of your hands, nails and cuticles, it is necessary to ensure their cleansing. Choose at your discretion:
- Wash your hands with soap or cleansing foam;
- Use a gel marked “soap-free”;
- Apply a gentle gel sanitizer;
- Treat with a disinfectant or antiseptic in the form of a gel or spray;
Soap and other cleansing cosmetics are best used with an optimal pH of 5.5. If water is used for cleansing, it should be warm to eliminate the stressful effects of temperature on the vessels and capillaries of the skin.
Antiseptics and disinfectants are used in the salon format, as they are more aggressive in their effects. Sanitizers are convenient for travel, for the office, and in other force majeure situations where there is no water to clean your hands and cuticles before applying skincare cosmetics or cream.
Hydration and nutrition
Part of the cuticle grows back already dry, as these are dead skin cells. Additionally, due to insufficient hydration, constant contact with detergents, dust, weather conditions, the skin of the hands dries out, and the cuticle can crack, tear and become inflamed when pathogenic microorganisms enter.
To avoid this, you need to take care of constant hydration and nutrition, both with improvised and special cosmetics.
To do this, after each hand washing and contact with an aggressive environment, it is necessary to apply a moisturizing or nourishing cream. The choice of product depends on the season and the initial condition of the skin.
- You can use a moisturizer during the day, as it has a lighter texture, and at night be sure to apply a nourishing one, or make a mask under plastic. It is better to choose products that are recommended for caring for the skin of your hands and nails at the same time.
- The second option is cuticle oil. The oils, vitamins, minerals and active additives it contains provide multidirectional effects that combine hydration and nutrition at the same time. It is recommended to apply the oil 1-3 times a day after cleansing. 1 drop of the product is placed at the base of the nail, and then distributed with your finger along the entire perimeter of the cuticle.
Ingredients of creams and oils
The following ingredients are found in the compositions of oils and creams:
- Hyaluronic acid. Able to absorb and store large amounts of moisture, activates the synthesis of collagen and elastin. The skin of the hands and cuticles are smoothed and receive intense hydration.
- Glycerol. Forms a film on the surface of the skin, retains moisture and protects the cuticle from drying out and splitting. Has softening properties.
- Vitamins A and E. Nourish, promote cell renewal, smooth the skin of the hands and cuticles. They are strong antioxidants that prevent wilting and aging.
- Beeswax. Forms a protective barrier, retains moisture, softens and activates metabolic processes.
- Essential and cosmetic oils. Dry and tired skin often lacks its own lipids, and it receives them thanks to the oils contained in cosmetics. They, in turn, contain amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and microelements, which additionally nourish cells, restore and slow down the aging process.
- The most popular oils in hand creams and cuticle products are shea, peach, almond, rose, coconut, and lavender.
- Natural extracts, herbal and plant extracts. Aloe vera is the most intense moisturizing component that can be found in hand care cosmetics. Along with it are cucumber and avocado. Chamomile and calendula have an antiseptic effect.
- Urea. It has an effective moisturizing effect and is a transport component for other cosmetic substances, delivering them to the deep layers of the skin. It has a beneficial effect on skin with dermatological problems, providing an anti-inflammatory and protective effect. It is also used in keratolytics, which contain from 10 to 30%.
Creams
It is better to select formulas aimed at several effects simultaneously, for example, hydration and nutrition, hydration and protection, restoration and nutrition. Thicker textures are suitable for the off-season and at night, and lighter compositions are suitable for summer and daytime, when you need quick absorption and a feeling of lightness after just a couple of minutes.
Several options for a cosmetic bag for hand, nail and cuticle care:
- Ultimate Strength Hand Salve, Kiehl'sThe rich and intense formula is recommended for dry and damaged hand skin. The cream seems to envelop your fingers like gloves and prevent moisture loss. Oils
The oil is designed to nourish the skin around the nail with lipids, thickening it, protecting it from moisture loss, exposure to external moisture, and nourishing it with vitamins, minerals and organic acids. A few good brands:

Manufacturer: Russia; part of the line is produced in South Korea.
Oil pencil
It is still the same product as regular oil, but in a convenient format for daily use “on the run”. You can carry it in your purse or cosmetic bag, or take it on trips. At the end of such a pencil there is a convenient applicator or brush, through which the oil reaches the cuticle precisely. Let's look at a few popular ones:
- OPI Cuticle Oil in pencilThe manufacturer's line of oils includes 12 types of aromas. The product is easy to apply, quickly absorbed, softens and nourishes the skin around the nail. Volume – 5 ml. Economical.

Massage
A massage procedure for nails and cuticles is recommended as an addition to the manicure procedure. It can be performed separately and at home, 2-5 times a week, to improve blood circulation in the fingertips, thereby accelerating nail growth and tidying up the condition of the skin.
Performed using oil or cream as a base. This improves glide, and the products penetrate deeper into the cuticle and nail plates.
What oils can I use? Peach, almond, coconut, arnica, tea tree, and shea are suitable. They can also be mixed in equal proportions, a few drops on a palette or foil.
Recommended sequence of massage movements:
- After performing a manicure or at any convenient time, apply 1 drop of oil to the skin around each finger;
- Using gentle circular movements, massage the skin around the cuticle, slightly “hammering” the product under the skin;
- We squeeze the index and middle fingers of the second hand (if we do it for ourselves) into a lock and “grab” the finger with the first phalanges. We perform circular massage movements from the first to the third phalanx, as if sliding gradually. So we warm up the whole hand. Relieve tension in fingers;
- Using your thumb and index finger, squeeze the tip of your finger with the nail of your second hand every 3 seconds. Let go, repeat. This promotes blood flow to the fingertips and cuticle skin.
- Perform all movements in a complex. After the massage, apply nourishing cream to the entire area of the hands.
Baths
Cuticle baths are part of a salon manicure and SPA hand care procedure. They can also be performed at home using related products or special cosmetics. The purpose of the bath may vary depending on the components used, but the primary goal is to moisturize, soften the skin and relieve tension from the hands.
Warm water, soap or shower gel, aroma oils, iodine, sea salt, herbal extracts, homemade decoctions and tinctures are used. A few homemade recipes to note:
With sea salt and aroma oil
Any version of sea salt will do, both regular and with additives. For 1 liter of warm water, 1 tablespoon of product and 3-5 drops of oil. We immerse our hands for 15 minutes. Before the bath, it will be useful to do a light massage, after which the water will relieve any remaining tension from the joints.
With decoction or tincture of medicinal herbs
Pour 2-3 tablespoons of chamomile, mint, plantain or sage flowers into 1 liter of hot water. Let it brew for 15 minutes, and then immerse your hands for 15 - 20 minutes. You can also add peach, shea butter, lavender, tea tree, apricot, coconut or almond oil.
After the bath, lubricate your hands generously with care cream or oil. Instead of dried flowers, you can use ready-made tinctures of chamomile, sage, calendula, plantain, buy them at the pharmacy.
For redness and peeling
If they are caused by dry skin on your hands, then a milk bath will help. Mix 1 liter of warm milk with 1 tbsp. olive, sunflower, flaxseed, almond, apricot, rose or peach oil to choose from. We immerse our hands for 20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water and apply an intensely nourishing cream. If redness is caused by an allergy, it is necessary to identify the allergen and use medicinal cosmetics.
Masks
Masks make it possible to quickly get your hands and cuticles in order at home. You can also purchase ready-made disposable hand masks with active ingredients. It is convenient not to apply masks to your hands, but to fill disposable plastic gloves or bags with them, then immerse your hand there for the recommended time, and dispose of them after use. Several recipes with different directions of action:
Brightening and nourishing
Boil the potatoes and mash them while still warm with a fork. Add the juice of half a lemon to it and mix. Fill the glove or bag, immerse your hands for 15 minutes and wrap them in warmth. Afterwards, rinse off and apply moisturizer.
Intensely moisturizing
Grate 1 cucumber and mix with aloe vera pulp from a piece of leaf about 2-3 cm. Stir, knead, and fill a bag or glove. We immerse our hands for 15 minutes. Afterwards, rinse your hands with warm water and apply nourishing cream.
Nutritious
Pour 3-4 tablespoons of finely ground oatmeal with 300-400 ml of hot water. Leave for 5-8 minutes, and then add 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt. Fill the bag or gloves and immerse your hands for 15-20 minutes. Wrap up in warmth. Afterwards, rinse with warm water and apply cream.
Paraffin therapy
You can perform the hot procedure at home or in the salon if you have a bath. The second option, more convenient and economical for use both in the salon and at home, is cold paraffin therapy.

About the product
The effect of using the product is visible after the first use. The cuticle is cleansed and stops growing. Even the worst burrs and small cuts are removed the first time. The nail takes on a well-groomed appearance and becomes stronger along its entire length.
Lentian, coenzyme Q10, enzymes, trace elements, amino acids, B vitamins, immunomodulatory polysaccharides - this is the composition of Shiitake mushroom extract. As well as Chinese buxus oil and D-panthenol, they envelop the nail and skin, enhancing blood microcirculation, accelerating metabolic processes many times over. Damask rose extract is a strong antiseptic and has powerful antimicrobial activity.
Mode of application:
Push back the overgrown cuticle with a stick, apply the serum and massage the entire space around the nail with your fingertips.
There is no beautiful manicure without beautiful cuticles. You can buy any varnish you want, paint it as carefully as possible, and cover it with a glossy, super-glossy top coat. But all your efforts will come to naught if your polish is framed by dry, peeled cuticles.
At the same time, you may not wear colored coating at all, but your hands will look much more attractive if the cuticles and skin around the nails are well-groomed. It’s not for nothing that in our world of varnish they have long been saying: in any unclear situation, moisturize the cuticle.
Today I want to tell you what products I use to take care of my cuticles (including my nails). All of them are as accessible as possible, so I dare to hope that the post will be useful.
Orly Cuticle Oil
Express serum for uncut manicure El Corazon Bali Spa Oil
I've already talked about these two products before, but they are so good that I wanted to mention them again. I leave links to earlier posts:
Essence nail and cuticle care pencil (orange)
Contains vitamin E, apricot kernel extract, almond and olive oils. Nourishes and restores the nail plate and cuticle.
Essence cuticle softening pencil (yellow)
Helps effectively and gently remove cuticles. Contains vitamin E, almond, avocado, citrus and lacquer oils.
Two excellent express products for quick but short-term cuticle care. Each of these pencils will instantly soften and moisturize the skin around the nails and will not leave behind any oily traces, but you can only count on a short-term effect. Usually I carry such things with me in my purse, sometimes I do too, but most often I use them before shooting a manicure.
Golden Rose Nail Expert Beauty Oil Nail & Cuticle
Nourishing oil to soften and moisturize cuticles and healthy nails. Contains sunflower seed, grape seed, avocado, sweet almond, olive oils & vitamin E.
Intensive hydration and restoration of nails and cuticles, thanks to a unique combination of moisturizing and nourishing natural oils. Absorbs quickly, does not leave a greasy film, protects the nail plates and restores the soft and smooth appearance of the nails and cuticles.
Relatively recently, Golden Rose, in addition to the varnishes, released a series of nail care products. Out of everything, I only tried cuticle oil, and I can say that the product turned out well.
The oil has a slightly sweet (maybe fruity) aroma, it is not too greasy, but not overly light either. It absorbs really quickly, especially if you massage the cuticle with it. You can leave it like that - it doesn’t drip from your fingers, of course you can’t work with papers, but with the keyboard it’s quite possible that it will remain clean. The hydration is not supernatural, I would rate it a four, but it is suitable for not advanced cases.
Eva Mosaic Moisturizing oil with vitamin E. Moisturizing for cuticles and nails
Natural product with apricot kernel and jojoba oil, vitamins A, D and E, aloe juice and wheat proteins. Quickly absorbed, nourishes cuticles and nails.
You may think that I photographed an empty bottle - and this is almost true. The oil stood with me for a long time almost untouched, and then, unnoticed by myself, I used the entire bottle, now it is completely left at the bottom. This is not a light “fast” oil, it is dense and definitely not suitable for on-the-go care. I usually apply it liberally to the cuticles and the skin around the nails when I sit in front of the laptop, sometimes before bed, partially rub it in, and let the residue absorb on its own. I won’t say that it is absorbed quickly, as the manufacturer claims, but otherwise he is right, the oil really nourishes the cuticle (and, apparently, nails).
It’s almost invisible in the photo, but the oil is orange in color, and for some reason it smells like something soapy. But I like.
Nail tonic Milv Revival Nail Spa
Cuticle gel with vitamins E and C. White microcapsules with vitamin E and C have an antioxidant and moisturizing effect on the cuticle and nails. The cuticle takes on a healthy, well-groomed appearance without burrs or cracks.
It is a gel with balls, which is supposed to be applied to the nails and the skin around them. And rub it in. I like to use this product after removing old polish and before applying new polish. Nails are instantly moisturized after contact with nail polish remover, the product is completely absorbed without leaving a trace, and you can immediately apply polish.
Unfortunately, this tonic has not been on the site for a long time, but it is still available nail growth gel Milv Nail Growth Spa.
Water-based gel with microcapsules of active ingredients strengthens, moisturizes and nourishes nails and cuticles. Unlike cuticle oil, the gel is quickly absorbed and does not leave a greasy residue. Contains glycerin, panthenol, extracts of algae, nettle, baobab, acacia, vitamin C and microcapsules of vitamins A and E. The product has a light strawberry aroma.
In my opinion, the products differ only in color and aroma - the second is green with blue balls. I will definitely buy more.
Nail oil Soap makers Lemon freshness
Your nails need special care - give them the sweet bliss of a delicate oil with a subtle lemon aroma. Beeswax will make your nails elastic, healing vegetable oils will give you diamond strength, and lemon essential oil will leave behind an aura of sensual freshness. Your nails will thank you!
It’s unlikely that I would have ever bought it if I hadn’t been looking for something to finish off my order with free delivery. I chose it because I didn’t want to grab another useless lipstick, and cuticle products are always useful and necessary.
It is an oily substance with a lemon aroma. The substance, as you can see, is heterogeneous, I googled other reviews - somewhere there are the same pimples, somewhere not. In any case, they do not affect the quality in any way. A very pleasant thing to use, it has a good effect on the cuticle and the skin around the nails. The oil itself is not absorbed very quickly, but if you massage the cuticle with it, the process will go much faster. I like to use it when I want to take a break from regular liquid oils, since you shouldn’t overuse them either (the reverse process may occur).
Oil is not used sparingly - I would even say, unnoticeably. However, the shelf life is short - only four months after opening. In my case, it has already expired, but, as you might have guessed, nothing prevents me from continuing to use the oil as long as it does not change its smell and properties.
Peeling to enhance nail growth with Lady Rose almonds
SPA care at home with kelp extract and apricot aroma. Nourishes the nail root, softens and exfoliates the cuticle, whitens the nail plate.
Liquid orange oil interspersed with something that most often remains at the bottom. To be honest, I don’t care what kind of growth, exfoliation, whitening there is. The main thing is why I love this oil, why I was terribly sad when I spilled the remains of the first bottle, why I looked for it with all my might, and when I found it, I bought two bottles at once (I needed eight) - it is ideal for my activities. I apply the oil before photographing the manicure, it lays down in a thin layer and is absorbed very quickly, while the cuticle looks as if it has just been intensively nourished with something very intense. um. nutritious. It also has a surprisingly pleasant apricot aroma.
I understand that not everyone takes pictures of their nails, but an express product for tidying up the cuticles and skin around the nails may be of interest to many.
Wax for nails and cuticles Belweder Panthenol Forte
The drug is intended for the care of nails and cuticles. It has the form of a light, non-greasy wax that is quickly absorbed, forming a thin protective layer on the surface of the nails and skin. Wax effectively softens and moisturizes even very dry, uneven areas around the fingernails and toenails. Promotes healing of minor injuries. Eliminates symptoms of inflammation. With systematic use, it significantly improves the condition of nails and accelerates their growth. Helps completely get rid of hangnails.
I bought the wax after positive reviews online, and now I’m already using my second jar. It has a positive effect on the cuticle, softens it, if there are small cracks or hangnails, it will help them heal faster. The wax is very dense, I don’t put it on my finger, but just move my finger over it, and then smear it on the cuticle, that’s enough. Not too greasy, but you need to rub it in to get absorbed faster. It has a strong lavender scent that turns off many people. I should have done it too, but for some reason it didn’t scare me away.
Sometimes I rub it into the nails themselves (in those rare moments when there is no varnish on them), I used to polish with wax, but now I’m too lazy.
DNC Nourishing nail wax
Allows you to return your nails to their natural shine and replenish the lack of nutrients necessary for the growth of healthy nails.
Castor oil in biowax is responsible for providing nails with nutrients, helping to make the cuticle softer, healing damage and wounds; paraffin and beeswax protect the nail plate from the effects of aggressive substances and ultraviolet radiation. Silicone makes nails stronger and fills the smallest cracks.
The complex includes ginseng, eleutherococcus, sea buckthorn, vitamins B, D, E, glucose, starch, polysaccharides, pectin substances, essential oils and trace elements - all those substances that are necessary for the growth of healthy nails.
DNC Nail polishing wax
A dual-action product that has both a cosmetic and therapeutic effect.
The polishing properties of wax are achieved due to the content of white clay, known as the finest of natural abrasives. White clay carefully and gently polishes nails, does not damage the nail plate, and gives it smoothness and shine.
To be honest, I don’t know how these waxes fundamentally differ from each other, except that the first is in a small, ugly jar and costs a little less, and the second is in a nicer little jar, but costs a little more. Well, the nutritious one is even softer, although this is already the second jar, in the first it was also hard (but, in any case, they are softer than Belvedere). However, why look for a difference if they have the same entire paragraph in the description.
I like both waxes in terms of their action. Softening, moisturizing, healing - everything you need from a quality care product. They apply greasyly and are absorbed, not to say very quickly. I use it occasionally at night.
Like Belvedere wax, I periodically rub both of these waxes into my nails - mostly at night, and sometimes just before applying polish. I thoroughly rub the wax into my nails so that it is completely absorbed, then I don’t degrease my nails, I paint them right away. Everything applies and stays on as usual. I also did polishing with these waxes, again, until I became too lazy. Maybe it's worth restarting.
Novosvit Strengthening wax cream-care against peeling nails
Deeply strengthens and restores the structure of damaged and thin nails, preventing splitting. Beeswax and silk proteins at the base of the formula instantly compensate for the lack of strength of the nail plate.
A white, medium-density cream with a light, pleasant aroma. Non-greasy, quickly absorbed, but takes good care of the skin around the nail. Is he doing something supernatural? Probably not, but, nevertheless, the remedy is good, useful and effective. Does he do something to his nails? Honestly, I don't know. I smeared it on my nails once or twice, but I’m more satisfied with wax in this matter.
Novosvit Lemon butter butter for nails and cuticles “Nail growth activator”
The melting texture of the butter based on natural lemon myrtle oil and biolipid complex nourishes the cuticle and restores the nail plate, promotes the activation of nail growth, and protects against brittleness and splitting.
First, let me admire the name “butter.” And be sure to do it in English! Butter or not, for me it’s an ordinary cream, denser in structure, really reminiscent of butter, but still a cream. The color is light yellow, the aroma is pleasant lemon. Despite its greater density, I can’t say that the cream is very greasy, it absorbs normally, and if you massage the cuticle with it, it’s even better. I am satisfied with the quality of care.
Again, I don’t know how these creams fundamentally differ in action. There is another one in the line - against hangnails. I think I'll try it too.
I can't say that all of these products are my absolute favorites. I will definitely repeat some things (for example, Milv gel, DNC waxes), I will use some once and go try new ones. Nevertheless, now I have all the described things in use, I like them, they do what they are supposed to do, even if they do not give the result declared by the manufacturer - and who trusts them, these manufacturers.
Have you tried any of these? Do you have your own favorite cuticle care products? Share, I will be very interested!
