Abutment Tooth

Abutment tooth - (in dentistry) this is an abutment tooth on which an artificial crown is installed in bridge prosthetics.

The supporting tooth undergoes special preparation for installation of an artificial crown - it is ground down, forming a cone-shaped tooth stump. This is necessary for reliable fixation of the crown on the abutment tooth using cement.

There are special requirements for supporting teeth - they must be intact or have small fillings. The supporting teeth are the basis for fixing the bridge, so the success of the entire prosthetics depends on their condition and proper preparation.

An abutment tooth is an element of the dental prosthetic system, which is located in the area of one or more teeth of the upper and lower jaws and is intended for connection with a bridge. It is intended not only for aesthetic purposes, but also for fixing the finished bridge. The tooth becomes the support for it, that is, the place where the fixed part (for example, metal) of the bridge is attached to the teeth that need to be restored. The prosthesis itself is often made of ceramic or composite, which makes it strong and durable. Due to its functions, the abutment tooth is one of the most important elements of the bridge structure. It allows you to ensure the durability and comfort of using bridges.
