Akro- (from the Greek akros - extreme, most distant, highest) is the first component of compound words, conveying the meaning of “extreme”, “upper”, “highest”.

This Greek root is used to form compounds meaning:

  1. extreme position of something (acropolis, acrobat);

  2. the highest degree, the highest manifestation of something (acrophobia, acromegaly);

  3. upper, external parts of the body or organs (acrodermatitis, acrocyanosis).
