An overdose of ampicillin may cause toxic effects on the central nervous system, especially in patients with renal failure. Treatment in this case should be symptomatic.

With long-term treatment with ampicillin, superinfection caused by drug-resistant microorganisms may occur in weakened patients. In such cases, it is recommended to prescribe B vitamins and vitamin C, and, if necessary, nystatin or levorin.
