Apex of the Patella

The apex of the patella (apex patella) is the highest point of the patella, located on the anterior surface of the knee joint. It is a small bulge that is formed as a result of the connection of the three surfaces of the patella: medial, lateral and posterior.

The apex of the patella is important to the functioning of the knee joint because it serves as the fulcrum for the femur when the leg is in a flexed position. In addition, the apex of the patella provides stability to the knee joint during walking and running, preventing it from hyperextending.

However, with some diseases, such as arthrosis, acetabular instability or knee injury, the apex of the patella can become a site of pain and discomfort. In these cases, it is recommended to consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

In general, the apex of the patella is an important anatomical structure necessary for the normal functioning of the knee joint and the health of the entire musculoskeletal system.
