Arachnodiditis may go undiagnosed and may go undetected for many years.

Arachnodiiditis is an infectious disease caused by herpes simplex virus type I or HSV-1. HSV-1 is most often associated with optic neuritis and less commonly causes perioral dermatitis, aphthous stomatitis, vesiculopustulosis, ophthalmic herpes, and herpetic pharyngitis. The main symptoms of the disease are attacks of sudden intense pain in the face/eye, red, painful bumps, pimples or sores in the corners of the mouth, where the chin is most likely connected. The clinical picture includes local manifestations and, in the case of ophthalmic damage, also visual impairment. Arachnoiditis is also often the cause of conjunctivitis that is difficult to treat, when inflammation of the conjunctiva lasts a long time and is accompanied by pain in the eyeball.
