Benzocaine is a local anesthetic that is used to reduce pain on the skin and mucous membranes. It is used in the form of ointments, suppositories or aerosols and is virtually non-toxic.

Benzocaine can be used to treat sores on the lining of the mouth and tongue, as well as to treat stomach ulcers, for which it can be taken orally in the form of lozenges.

However, benzocaine has some side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness, which may be more severe in people with heart or kidney disease. Therefore, you should consult your doctor before using benzocaine.
