Betacard: description, application and side effects

Betacard (international name - Atenolol) is a representative of the pharmacological group of beta1-adrenergic blockers (cardioselective). The drug is manufactured in India by Torrent Pharmaceuticals and is presented in the form of tablets containing 50 mg or 100 mg of the active substance Atenolol.

Indications for the use of Betacard include the treatment of arterial hypertension, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction (with stable hemodynamic parameters), tachycardia of various types (including sinus, atrial, ventricular and paroxysmal), extrasystole, atrial flutter and fibrillation, hyperkinetic cardiac syndrome, mitral prolapse valve, neurocirculatory dystonia of the hypertensive type, as well as complex therapy of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pheochromocytoma, thyrotoxicosis, essential tremor and migraine (as prophylaxis).

It is necessary to take into account contraindications to the use of Betacard. It should not be prescribed for hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, sinus bradycardia (heart rate less than 50 beats/min), sinoatrial block, sick sinus syndrome, AV block II-III degree, arterial hypotension (systolic blood pressure less than 90 mm Hg .), acute or chronic heart failure in the stage of decompensation, cardiogenic shock, peripheral circulatory disorders and during breastfeeding.

Side effects when using Betacard can occur in different systems and organs. Nervous system and sensory disturbances may occur, such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, drowsiness or insomnia, nightmares, depression, anxiety, confusion or short-term memory loss, hallucinations, decreased responsiveness, paresthesia and convulsions. Visual impairment, decreased secretion of saliva and tear fluid, and conjunctivitis are also possible.

From the cardiovascular system and blood (hematopoiesis, hemostasis), bradycardia, palpitations, myocardial conduction disturbances, AV block, arrhythmias, weakened myocardial contractility, heart failure, hypotension, fainting, cold extremities, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and anemia may occur.

Disorders of the respiratory and digestive systems may also occur, such as bronchospasm, dyspnea, worsening asthma symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth and changes in taste.

In rare cases, allergic reactions, angioedema, decreased potency, impaired renal and liver function, increased size of the mammary glands in men, and decreased blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes may occur.

Before starting treatment with Betacard, you must consult your doctor and undergo regular examinations, follow dosage recommendations and do not exceed the recommended course of treatment. You should also avoid alcohol and certain medications that may increase the risk of side effects.
