Biological Oxidation

Biological oxidation is the process of removing electrons from an atom or molecule and transferring them through a system of special carriers.

This process occurs in living cells and is part of cellular respiration. During biological oxidation, electrons are transferred along the electron transport chain located on the inner membrane of mitochondria.

The ultimate goal of biological oxidation is the synthesis of ATP molecules - the main source of energy for the cell. The transfer of electrons is accompanied by the release of energy, which is used for the synthesis of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate.
