The calcaneofibular ligament (l. calcaneofibulare, pna, bna) is a flat articular ligament located in the lateral region of the ankle joint. It connects the outer surface of the heel bone to the outer malleolus. This ligament strengthens the ankle joint laterally and prevents excessive extension of the foot. Injury to the calcaneofibular ligament often occurs when the foot rolls in and is one of the most common ankle injuries.
