Capryl: uses, side effects and limitations

Capryl (international name Captopril) is an antihypertensive drug that belongs to the class of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is used to treat hypertension, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, stable left ventricular dysfunction in patients after myocardial infarction, and diabetic nephropathy associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Capryl is produced in South Korea by Boryung Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and in Turkey by Mustafa Nevzat Ilach Sanai A.S. It is available in the form of tablets of various dosages (12.5 mg, 25 mg and 50 mg) containing the active ingredient - captopril.

Like any other medicine, Capril has its contraindications and limitations for use. It should not be prescribed to patients with hypersensitivity to captopril, as well as to those who have had angioedema when previously prescribed ACE inhibitors. It is also contraindicated in primary hyperaldosteronism, pregnancy and breastfeeding. In addition, an assessment of the risk-benefit ratio is necessary in the following cases: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, aortic stenosis or other obstructive changes that impede the outflow of blood from the heart; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with low cardiac output; severe renal dysfunction; bilateral renal artery stenosis or stenosis of the artery of a single kidney; presence of a transplanted kidney; hyperkalemia; childhood.

Capryl can cause side effects, like any other medicine. Some can be serious and require immediate medical attention. Side effects related to the nervous system and sensory organs may include fatigue, dizziness, headache, central nervous system depression, drowsiness, confusion, depression, ataxia, seizures, numbness or tingling in the extremities, visual and/or smell disturbances. . Side effects related to the cardiovascular system and blood may include hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmias (atrial tachycardia or ventricular tachycardia), angioedema, anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia. Impaired renal function may also occur, including increased creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, as well as the development of acute renal failure. In addition, Capryl may cause a cough, which may be dry and nonproductive, as well as angioedema of the lips, tongue, throat, and/or face.
