Casodex: a drug for the treatment of prostate cancer
Casodex (international name Bicalutamide) is an antiandrogen drug used to treat prostate cancer. It is produced by AstraZeneca and Zeneca in the UK and Germany.
Casodex is available in two dosage forms: 50 mg film-coated tablets and 150 mg film-coated tablets. The active ingredient is bicalutamide.
The drug is used to treat men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Casodex blocks the action of male sex hormones (androgens), which can promote the growth of prostate cancer cells. Additionally, it can be used in combination with other drugs such as lutamide and goserelin to enhance the effect of treatment.
Like any other medication, Casodex has a number of contraindications and side effects. It is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as in women and children. Restrictions on use exist in patients with impaired liver function. Side effects may include angina, hypertension, heart failure, chest pain, diabetes mellitus, polyuria, dysuria, urinary retention, edema, cough, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, rhinitis, dyspeptic symptoms, xerostomia, gastric bleeding, melena, anxiety, depression, decreased libido, drowsiness, nervousness, myasthenia gravis, myalgia, arthritis, convulsive twitching of the muscles of the limbs, contractures, fever, sweating, allergic reactions.
You should also be careful when using Casodex in patients with impaired liver function. It may also interact with indirect anticoagulants.
Casodex is an effective drug for the treatment of prostate cancer, but its use should only be prescribed by a doctor and strictly monitored during treatment.
