Cotrimoxazole

Cotrimoxazole is a combined antibacterial drug containing two active substances: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.

Manufactured in India, France and other countries by such companies as Agio Pharmaceuticals, Wave International, Creat Laboratory, Promed Exports Pvt. Ltd. Available in the form of tablets of various dosages and oral suspension.

It is used mainly to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary system, skin, and gastrointestinal tract. Effective for pneumonia, cystitis, pyelonephritis, gonorrhea, diarrhea, abscesses and other diseases.

Contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, liver and kidney diseases, folic acid deficiency, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

May cause dyspepsia, allergic reactions, and blood disorders. Potentiates the effect of indirect anticoagulants and sulfonylureas. Requires monitoring of blood composition and kidney function with long-term use.
