Delagil: an antimalarial drug with multifunctional applications

Delagil, also known by its international name Chloroquine, is an antimalarial drug that is widely used in medicine. It is produced in various countries, including Hungary, where it is produced by ICN, Alkaloid and Egis Pharmaceutical Plant.

The main active ingredient of Delagil is Chloroquine. The drug is available in various dosage forms, including tablets with a dosage of 250 mg and an injection solution with the same dosage. Chloroquine is effective in individual prevention and treatment of all types of malaria, extraintestinal amebiasis, as well as as part of combination therapy for a number of other diseases.

Indications for the use of Delagil include the following conditions: malaria of all types, extraintestinal amebiasis, chronic and subacute forms of systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, photodermatoses, porphyria cutanea tarda, extrasystole and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

However, like any other medicine, Delagil has some contraindications and restrictions for use. The drug is not recommended for hypersensitivity to Chloroquine, impaired liver and kidney function, severe damage to the heart muscle with rhythm disturbances, as well as diseases of the blood, nervous system, psoriasis, porphyrinuria, diseases of the retina and cornea, as well as during pregnancy. There are also restrictions on the use of Delagil for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, retinopathy, epilepsy and chronic alcoholism.

Side effects may occur when using Delagil. Some of these include gastrointestinal problems such as decreased appetite and abdominal pain, as well as headaches, dizziness and sleep disorders. With long-term use of the drug, more serious side effects may occur, such as corneal clouding, blurred vision, graying of hair, dermatitis and photosensitivity. Rare but serious side effects are myocardial and muscle damage, decreased blood pressure, psychosis, seizures, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia.
