Diastabol

Diastabol: antidiabetic drug from Germany

Diastabol (international name - miglitol) is an antidiabetic drug from the group of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, produced by Bayer AG in Germany. The drug is presented in the form of 50 mg tablets and is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus as monotherapy when diet and adequate physical activity are ineffective.

Diastabol exerts its effect by blocking alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates in the small intestine, which leads to a slowdown in the absorption of carbohydrates from food and a decrease in blood glucose levels. As a result, the risk of complications associated with diabetes is reduced.

However, like any medicine, Diastabol has contraindications and side effects. The drug is not recommended for hypersensitivity to its components, malabsorption syndrome in chronic intestinal diseases, Roemheld's syndrome, large hernias, ulcerative colitis, intestinal strictures, creatinine clearance below 25 ml/min, pregnancy, breastfeeding and under the age of 18 years.

Possible side effects of Diastabol include hypoglycemia (when combined with other antidiabetic drugs), dyspepsia (abdominal discomfort, flatulence, diarrhea), increased transaminase activity, and allergic reactions.

When using Diastabol, it is necessary to take into account its interaction with other drugs. Thus, Diastabol enhances the hypoglycemic effect of other antidiabetic drugs, including sulfonylurea derivatives and laxatives. Antacids, cholestyramine, intestinal adsorbents, and digestive enzymes reduce the effectiveness of the drug. In addition, Diastabol reduces the bioavailability of metformin and the absorption of propranolol and ranitidine.

In case of an overdose of the drug, symptoms may appear, such as flatulence, a feeling of fullness in the stomach, bloating and pain in the abdomen, and loose stools. Treatment in this case consists of temporarily eliminating the consumption of foods and drinks containing carbohydrates, as well as symptomatic therapy.

It is important to note that when using Diastabol, you must follow your doctor's recommendations and not exceed the recommended dose. You should also not take the drug without consulting your doctor, especially if you have other medical conditions or are taking other medications. It is also important to monitor your blood glucose levels and have regular tests.

In general, Diastabol is an effective antidiabetic agent that can be prescribed by a doctor for certain indications. However, like any other medication, it has contraindications and side effects, so it must be used with caution and only as prescribed by a doctor.
