Doxepin

Doxepin is a drug from the group of antidepressants - selective inhibitors of neuronal uptake, which is used for the treatment of depression, anxiety and sleep disorders in neuroses, alcoholism, organic diseases of the central nervous system, psychoneurotic disorders with anxiety, depression, psychotic depression (including involutional, reactive- depressive phase of manic-depressive psychosis). It can also be used in general therapeutic practice for the treatment of duodenal ulcer, dumping syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, chronic pain in cancer patients, itching, chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Doxepin is produced in Poland, at the Polfa Pharmaceutical Plant in Krakow. It is available in the form of 10mg and 25mg capsules containing doxepin as the active ingredient. Synonyms for the drug include Sinequan.

Like any drug, doxepin can cause side effects. These may include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, impaired taste, aphthous stomatitis, diarrhea, constipation, urinary retention, visual disturbances, general weakness, a feeling of flushing of the face, dizziness, tinnitus, headache, drowsiness. , disorientation, hallucinations, paresthesia, ataxia, extrapyramidal disorders, convulsions, tremor, hypotension, tachycardia, photosensitivity, allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, angioedema, eosinophilia). Rarely, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, increased or decreased libido, testicular swelling, gynecomastia (in men), breast enlargement, galactorrhea (in women), hypo- or hyperglycemia, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, alopecia may occur.

When using doxepin, you must pay attention to possible contraindications for use. These include hypersensitivity, angle-closure glaucoma, AV block, prostate adenoma, pregnancy, breastfeeding, children (up to 12 years). It is also important to remember the possibility of interactions with other drugs, for example, cimetidine increases plasma concentrations and increases the risk of side effects of doxepin, and barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin can reduce its effectiveness. Therefore, before you start taking doxepin, you should consult your doctor and inform him about all the medications you are taking and your health status. Also, during treatment with doxepin, it is not recommended to drink alcohol and drive vehicles and mechanisms that require increased concentration and quick reaction.
