Drotaverine-FPO: a drug for the treatment of smooth muscle spasms

Drotaverine-FPO is a drug that belongs to the group of antispasmodics of isoquinoline derivatives. It is produced in Russia by the Obolensk Pharmaceutical Enterprise and contains the active substance - drotaverine.

The drug is available in the form of 40 mg tablets. Its international name is Drotaverine, and it is also known under various synonyms, such as Bioshpa, No-shpa, Spasmol, etc.

Drotaverine-FPO is used to treat spasms of smooth muscles of internal organs. It is effective for cardio- and pyloric spasms, chronic gastroduodenitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, cholelithiasis (hepatic colic), chronic cholecystitis, postcholecystectomy syndrome, hypermotor dyskinesia of the biliary tract, spastic intestinal dyskinesia, intestinal colic due to gas retention after surgery, colitis, proctitis, tenesmus, flatulence, urolithiasis (renal colic), pyelitis, spasm of cerebral vessels, coronary and peripheral arteries. It can also be used to weaken uterine contractions and relieve cervical spasm during childbirth, as well as to alleviate smooth muscle spasm during instrumental interventions.

It is important to note that Drotaverine-FPO has contraindications for use in cases of hypersensitivity and glaucoma. When using the drug, side effects may occur, such as a feeling of heat, dizziness, arrhythmias, hypotension, palpitations, sweating (more often with parenteral administration), allergic dermatitis.

The interaction of Drotaverine-FPO with other drugs may enhance the effect of other antispasmodics (including m-anticholinergics), hypotension caused by tricyclic antidepressants, quinidine, novocainamide. The reliability of eliminating spasms is increased by phenobarbital, and the spasmogenic activity of morphine is reduced by Drotaverine-FPO.

In case of an overdose of Drotaverine-FPO, AV blockade, cardiac arrest, and paralysis of the respiratory center may occur. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the dosage and not exceed the recommended dose.
