Durogesic

Durogesic: a drug for the treatment of pain

Durogesic is a transdermal therapeutic system containing the active substance fentanyl, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals N.V. in Belgium. Fentanyl belongs to the group of phenylperidine derivatives and is a powerful opioid analgesic.

Durogesic is used to treat various types of pain, including chronic pain due to cancer, intractable pain (application of a patch), severe pain syndrome, postoperative analgesia, and also as a premedication before surgery and for induction of anesthesia.

Durogesic is available in several doses: 25 mcg/hour, 50 mcg/hour, 75 mcg/hour and 100 mcg/hour. When using the patch, direct exposure to external heat sources must be avoided.

Despite the high effectiveness of Durogesic in the treatment of pain, it has a number of contraindications and limitations in use. It should not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to fentanyl, bronchial asthma, respiratory depression, cranial hypertension, obstetric surgery, drug addiction, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When using Durogesic, side effects may occur, such as hypoventilation, respiratory depression, bronchospasm, paradoxical stimulation of the central nervous system, confusion, hallucinations, short-term muscle rigidity (including pectoralis), bradycardia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, hepatic colic, retention urine, amblyopia.

Durogesic may also interact with other drugs such as opiates, sedatives, hypnotics, phenothiazines, tranquilizers, anesthetics, muscle relaxants, sedating antihistamines, alcohol and other depressants, increasing the risk of side effects.

In case of overdose of Durogesic, respiratory depression may develop, which requires immediate medical attention. Treatment includes administration of naloxone, inhaled oxygen, mechanical ventilation, and immediate removal of the patch when it is used.

Special instructions for the use of Durogesic include gradual withdrawal of the drug, especially when using large doses in depleted and asthenic patients, in order to avoid the development of secondary respiratory depression and other side effects. It is also necessary to avoid the use of Durogesic in patients with impaired liver or kidney function, as well as in elderly patients.

Before using Durogesic, you should discuss all possible risks and side effects with your doctor and strictly follow the recommendations for use. Do not change the dosage or stop using the drug without your doctor's consent.
