Embolism

Embolism is a serious condition in which an embolus becomes lodged in an artery and blocks blood flow. This can occur in any artery in the body, but the most common form is pulmonary embolism, where a blood clot or other material becomes lodged in a pulmonary artery. If the embolus gets stuck in any other artery, it is called systemic embolism.

Emboli are usually caused by blood clots that can form inside the heart, especially in the presence of mitral valve disease or after a myocardial infarction. In addition, emboli can form as a result of other factors such as IVs, air bubbles, fat emboli, and foreign bodies.

The clinical manifestations of embolism depend on the location of the embolus in the body. For example, if an embolus becomes lodged in a pulmonary artery, it can lead to a short-term or prolonged lack of oxygen in the lung tissue, which can lead to respiratory failure and even death. If an embolus becomes lodged in an artery that supplies the brain, it can lead to a stroke.

Various methods are used to treat embolism, including anticoagulants, which prevent new blood clots from forming, and embolectomy, which removes the clot from the artery. In some cases, streptokinase is used to help sort out the embolus.

It is important to note that embolism can be a dangerous and even fatal condition, so it is important to seek medical help if you have symptoms associated with this condition. Symptoms may include chest pain, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, leg pain, irregular pulse, dizziness and loss of consciousness. If you suspect you have an embolism, seek medical attention immediately.

An embolism is a condition where a small amount of blood escapes from blood vessels and enters small arteries or veins. This can happen under a variety of conditions, such as trauma, surgery, or inflammation. When an embolus (blood clot) gets stuck somewhere, it can block blood flow and cause serious consequences to the body. In this article we will look at what an embolism is, how it manifests itself and how to treat it.

Embolism most often occurs in the lungs
