Hepatic encephalopathy (lat. Encephalopathia hepatitis) is a condition in which the brain is affected due to chronic or acute infection of viral hepatitis.
The most common symptom is headache; however, nausea, vomiting, cramps, dizziness and other symptoms may also occur. In some cases, depression, cognitive impairment and thought disorder may develop. Damage to the nervous system can also lead to bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke. The encephalopathic form of the disease can manifest itself at the end of the acute period and progress to a coma-like state. In some cases of encephalopathy, concomitant neurological manifestations and symptoms are observed, such as: - Impaired consciousness, memory loss, hallucinations. - Movement disorders, lack of coordination of movements, tremors, unsteadiness, severe weakness or, on the contrary, muscle rigidity.
