False cyst (Pseudocyst)

A false cyst is an accumulation of fluid in a cyst-like lobule of an organ that does not have an epithelial lining. For example, a pancreatic pseudocyst can form in a person as a result of chronic or as a complication of acute pancreatitis. Since the false cyst is filled with enzyme-rich pancreatic juice, it can slowly increase in size and cause occasional abdominal pain associated with increased levels of enzymes in the blood.

Typically, a false cyst is detected during examination of the abdominal cavity, as well as with the help of x-ray or ultrasound. Treatment involves surgical drainage, during which the false cyst is most often connected to the stomach (marsupialization).
