First aid for cardiac arrest: performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a child

You found a child lying motionless on the ground. First, be sure that the scene is safe.
Determine the presence of consciousness in a child
• Ask loudly: “Do you need help? »
• Clap your hands.
• If the child does not respond, squeeze the trapezius muscle.
If the child is unconscious: • Gently turn the child onto his or her back (only if necessary).
Open the airway
and check for breathing
• Tilt your baby's head back and lift his chin.
• To detect breathing, use visual, auditory and tactile control for 5 seconds.
If the child is not breathing:
Take 2 full mouth-to-mouth breaths
•Pinch your baby's nostrils and cover them tightly

Check for a pulse
• Check the carotid pulse for 10 seconds.
If the child does not have a pulse:
Call an ambulance
• Send someone to call an ambulance.
Find the right hand position
• Use your fingers to feel the indentation on the
lower edge of the sternum. • Place the heel of the palm of your other hand on
sternum above the place where they are

performing thrusts on the sternum. • Avoid touching your chest with your fingers.
Do 5 sternum thrusts
• When performing pushes, the rescuer's shoulders should be above his hands.
• Pushes on the sternum are performed to a depth of up to 3 cm.
• Approximately 5 pushes should be made in 3 seconds (about 100 pushes per minute).
• Push slowly in a vertical line, keeping your hands on your chest at all times.
• Maintain the airway with your other hand.
Take 1 full breath
• Gently tilt your baby's head back and lift his chin.
• Pinch your baby's nostrils and place your lips tightly around his mouth.
• Give 1 slow blow for 1.5-2 seconds.
• Watch the chest rise to ensure air is moving into the lungs.
Repeat cycles of chest thrusts and blowing
• Do about 20 cycles for about 1 minute.
• If the ambulance has not yet been called, call “03”.
Recheck for pulse and breathing
• Feel your pulse for 5 seconds.
If the child's pulse is detected, but he is not breathing: • Perform artificial ventilation,
until the ambulance arrives.
If the child's pulse is not detectable and
she's not breathing:
• Continue CPR until the ambulance arrives.
• Continue with cycles of 5 chest thrusts and one blow.
• Check your pulse every few minutes.
