Flu: myths and reality

From year to year, the virus that causes this disease is visited by a huge number of people. Flu is not such a mysterious disease. Meanwhile, many misconceptions and even myths are associated with it.

Myth 1: ARI, ARVI and influenza are different names for the same disease

In fact, these are different diseases caused by different viruses.

Myth 2: There is no point in treating the flu: this disease is not dangerous and will go away on its own

In fact, the flu can have serious complications and even death. Therefore, timely treatment is important.

Myth 3: For people with strong immune systems, the flu is not dangerous

Even people with healthy immune systems are at risk of getting sick.

Myth 4: high fever must be brought down immediately

It is better to let the body cope with the temperature on its own, but if you feel very unwell, you can take an antipyretic.

Myth 5: The flu is best treated with antibiotics

Antibiotics do not act on viruses, so they are useless for the flu.

Myth 6: To avoid getting the flu, all you need to do is take vitamins and eat garlic.

This is helpful, but does not guarantee protection against the flu.

Myth 7: Vaccination provides 100% protection against influenza

Vaccination reduces the risk of getting sick by about 80-90%.

Myth 8: Vaccination can cause disease

Modern vaccinations are safe and cannot cause the flu.

Myth 9: Due to mutation of viruses, it is impossible to create an effective vaccine

WHO tracks virus mutations and makes recommendations for creating vaccines. They are effective.

Myth 10: It’s too late to get vaccinated after the start of the epidemic.

It is better to get vaccinated before the epidemic, but vaccination is useful even after it starts.
