Folliculoma is a benign tumor that develops from hair follicles. Follicles are sacs in the skin from which hair grows.
Folliculomas are usually small nodules measuring 1-2 mm. They can be single or multiple. Most often, folliculomas appear on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back.
The causes of follicle formation are not completely clear. It is assumed that they can develop due to inflammation or injury to the follicle. Their development may also be influenced by genetic predisposition.
Folliculomas are usually asymptomatic and do not require treatment. However, sometimes they can cause discomfort, itching or pain. In such cases, minor surgery may be required to remove them.
The diagnosis of folliculoma is made based on visual examination and the results of histological examination. Differential diagnosis is carried out with acne, milia and other skin formations.
The prognosis for folliculomas is favorable; these tumors do not give rise to malignant degeneration. If necessary, folliculomas can be safely and effectively removed surgically.
