Fucus

Botanical description. Bladderwort and knotweed fucus belong to a group of brown algae that live in the shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the North and Western Baltic Seas, as well as in the Pacific Ocean. The ribbon-like, dichotomously branching branches of Fucus reach a length of 1 m and have a rigid central vein and air bubbles, most often located in pairs. Bunches of fucus often form extensive thickets. They are collected with nets and quickly dried.

Active ingredients: iodine in the form of organic salts associated with protein; mucus, polyphenols with antibacterial action.

Healing action and application. Due to their high iodine content, fucus was previously used mainly in the form of herbal preparations for diseases of the thyroid gland. Nowadays, fucus has become popular as a means of losing weight because it enhances metabolism. It is prescribed for preparing baths during weight loss courses. Both of these forms of use are not recommended because they are risky and pointless. The German National Health Service speaks out against the use of fucus.
