Funnel Chest

Funnel Chest is a chest deformity characterized by a depression in the sternum and an inward curvature of the costal cartilages connected to it.

With this disease, the sternum and lower ribs are pressed into the chest, causing it to take on a funnel-shaped shape. The medical name for this condition is sunken chest (pectus excavatum).

The cause of occurrence is a violation of the formation of cartilage tissue of the sternum and ribs during intrauterine development of the fetus.

The deformity can progress during the period of intensive growth of the child. In adults, progression usually stops.

The disease is more common in boys. Treatment is mainly surgical and is aimed at restoring the normal shape of the chest.

The funnel chest is a deep depression in the sternum area and the connective tissues of the costal cartilages are curved inward. Such a fusion of elements of the chest leads to serious deformation, which affects the functioning of the lungs and cardiovascular system.

Pectus excavatum is a chest deformity that occurs due to improper formation of the thoracic region during fetal development. This causes the bones and ribs of the chest to not fit together properly, resulting in a depression or indentation. In some cases, the breastbone may be curved inwards and the ribs may be positioned in the wrong direction, resulting in a funnel-shaped breastbone. The deformity can be detected by examining the chest with fingers. If the pathology is present inside the abdominal cavity, it can cause problems with the lungs and heart, if there are bulges in the internal organs

A funnel chest is an anomaly that is characterized by a depression in the sternum, as well as an inward curvature of the rib joints, which leads to deformation of this part of the body. This anomaly has the medical name “sunken chest” (pectus excavatum). It can be found in men and women of any age.

A funnel-shaped chest can occur in various combinations, such as flattened pectoral muscle (musculus pectoralis), excessive protrusion of the sternum (stern
