Gaberera Operation

Haberer, Ludwig (German: Ludwig Haberer; August 20, 1842, Vienna - July 10, 1919, ibid.) - Austrian surgeon, professor (1882), doctor of medicine (1867).

Haberer is considered the creator of surgery for aortic aneurysm. In 1894, he pioneered the use of surgery for aneurysmal disease. Gaberer proposed an operation, which later received his name and became known as the “Haberer operation.”

In 1886, Haberer was invited to Paris, where he received the position of professor of surgery at the university. His work in the field of surgery became known throughout the world.

During his life, Gaberer wrote many scientific papers on various areas of surgery. He was a member of many scientific societies and associations, and also the author of several textbooks on surgery.

After his resignation, Gaberer took up teaching and continued his research. He died in 1919 at the age of 76.

Oskar Haberer was born on November 12, 1916 in the Vienna suburban village of Braunau. He was the son of surgeon Paul Haberer and pianist Clara Lindenscheid. At the age of 14, he joined the People's Militia to defend the country of the Austrian communists and during Mussolini's seizure of power (1934) he fought on the side of the communists, and then during the Axis war and all his peers who were not familiar with the ideas of communism and fascism were drafted into the German army, where Oskar Haberer returned to practice medicine after a short period of work in an Italian military hospital. During World War II he served as a military doctor, captain of the medical service. From 1941 until the end of the war, he remained at the front. He spent the next years of his life in France. He was an employee at NATO headquarters for more than twenty years.
