Gelusil Liquid: suspension for the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
Gelusil Liquid is a drug belonging to the group of astringent, enveloping and antacid drugs based on aluminum. Manufactured by Goedecke and Parke-Davis in Germany. The international name of the drug is Simaldrate. Gelusil Liquid is available in the form of a suspension for oral administration. The active ingredient is simaldrat.
The drug is used for the treatment of acute and chronic gastritis with increased and normal secretory function of the stomach in the acute phase, acute duodenitis, peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum in the acute phase, hiatal hernia, postcholecystectomy syndrome, chronic pancreatitis, cholecystitis, operated stomach syndrome, dyspepsia , discomfort or pain in the epigastrium, heartburn after excessive consumption of alcohol, nicotine, coffee and other dietary disorders and medications.
Contraindications to the use of Gelusil Liquid are hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, severe forms of renal failure, pregnancy, lactation and children under 10 years of age.
Side effects of the drug may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, changes in taste, hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis, renal failure, hypermagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hypercalciuria, hyperaluminemia, allergic reactions, osteomalacia, osteoporosis and encephalopathy.
The interaction of Gelusil Liquid with other drugs can lead to a decrease in the absorption of iron, tetracyclines, propranolol, isoniazid. When using the drug together with citrus juices, the likelihood of developing hypermagnesemia increases.
An overdose of Gelusil Liquid has not been described in the literature.
If you have diabetes or hypersensitivity to milk proteins, it is preferable to use a suspension that does not contain milk powder and sugar. In patients with impaired renal function, magnesium levels should be regularly monitored and long-term use in high doses should be avoided. The interval between taking the drug and other medications should be at least 2 hours.
The dosage of Gelusil Liquid depends on the age and health status of the patient. The usually recommended dose for adults and children over 10 years of age is 2-3 teaspoons of suspension (10-15 ml) 4 times a day after meals and before bedtime. For children aged 1 to 10 years, the dose is determined by the doctor.
Gelusil Liquid should be stored out of the reach of children at a temperature not exceeding 25 degrees Celsius. The shelf life of the drug is 3 years.
Before using Gelusil Liquid, you should consult your doctor and read the instructions for use. It is not recommended to exceed the recommended dose of the drug and continue taking it for more than 14 days without a doctor’s prescription.
