Hypersalivation

Hypersalivation is an increased secretion of saliva. It is characterized by excessive production and secretion of saliva from the salivary glands.

The causes of hypersalivation can be different. These include:

  1. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (gastritis, stomach ulcers, esophagitis)

  2. Diseases of the salivary glands (sialoadenitis, salivary stones)

  3. Neurological disorders (Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis)

  4. Taking certain medications

  5. Pregnancy

  6. Stress, anxiety

Signs of hypersalivation are: excessive salivation, inability to hold saliva in the mouth, secretion of more than 1 liter of saliva per day.

For diagnosis, the following are carried out: medical history, examination of the mouth and pharynx, palpation of the salivary glands, and laboratory tests.

Treatment is aimed at eliminating the cause. Medications and physical therapy may be used. If conservative methods are ineffective, surgical intervention is performed.

Prompt treatment of hypersalivation is important to prevent complications such as irritation and maceration of the skin around the mouth, as well as an increased risk of caries due to excess saliva.

Symptoms of hypersalivation include increased salivation, leakage of saliva, pharyngeal discomfort, pain in the
