Glucomide (international name - glibenclamide) is an antidiabetic drug, a sulfonylurea derivative, produced by Arab Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Co. Ltd. in Jordan. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, physical activity and weight loss do not help compensate for hyperglycemia.

Glucomide is available in the form of 5 mg tablets containing glibenclamide as the active ingredient. It works by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas, which helps lower blood sugar levels.

However, like any drug, glucomide has contraindications and side effects. Glucomide should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to sulfonamide drugs, thiazade diuretics, as well as in diabetic precomatous and comatose states, ketoacidosis, extensive burns, surgical interventions and injuries, intestinal obstruction, gastric paresis, conditions accompanied by impaired absorption of food, the development of hypoglycemia (infectious diseases etc.), hypo- or hyperthyroidism, impaired liver and kidney function, leukopenia, type 1 diabetes mellitus, pregnancy and lactation.

Glucomide may also interact with other drugs such as antifungals, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, H2-blockers, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs, MAO inhibitors, clofibrate, bezafibrate, probenecid, paracetamol, ethionamide, anabolic steroids, pentoxifylline , allopurinol, cyclophosphamide, reserpine, sulfonamides and insulin. Urine acidifying agents (ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, ascorbic acid) and alcohol can enhance the hypoglycemic effect of glucomide.

Therefore, before using glucomide, you should consult your doctor and inform him of all medications you are taking and your medical condition. It is also necessary to monitor your blood sugar levels and follow a diet and physical activity regimen.

Despite existing contraindications and side effects, glucomide is one of the most common and effective treatments for type 2 diabetes and can be used in combination with other antidiabetic drugs.
