House of Invalides

A nursing home is a place where people with physical or mental problems can receive medical care and social service support. The history of the Invalides' Home begins in the 18th century, when the first institutions for war and labor invalids were created in France. Later, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, such a house appeared in many European countries.

In Russia, the first Home for the Disabled was opened in Moscow on the territory of an old monastery. It was created in 1817 thanks to the initiative of Nicholas I and was called the “House of Civil Charity of the Beketov Brothers.” This house became a model for many similar institutions in Russia and abroad. Despite the fact that it was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1912, its significance for the development of the disabled movement in Russia remains enormous.

Today, the Home for the Disabled is part of the healthcare and social protection infrastructure in Russia. It provides medical, psychological, educational and social rehabilitation to people with physical or mental disabilities. IN
