Human anti-diphtheria immunoglobulin: description and application

Diphtheria is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It is transmitted through airborne droplets and can lead to serious complications, including disruption of the heart, nervous system and kidneys. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent diphtheria, but if there is a high risk of infection, diphtheria immunoglobulin can be used as an additional measure.

Human anti-diphtheria immunoglobulin is used in the following cases:

  1. in contact with a patient with diphtheria to prevent the disease;
  2. if diphtheria is suspected in persons who are not vaccinated or with incomplete vaccination, as well as in immunocompromised patients;
  3. as a treatment for diphtheria in combination with antibiotic therapy.

The drug is administered intravenously in a dose depending on the patient’s weight and the degree of risk of infection. It is usually well tolerated, but side effects such as allergic reactions and fever may occur.

In conclusion, human diphtheria immunoglobulin is an important tool in the prevention and treatment of diphtheria. It should be used only as prescribed by a doctor and in accordance with the instructions for use.
