Impramin: an effective antidepressant from India

Impramine, also known by the international name Imipramine, is a drug from the group of antidepressants - non-selective inhibitors of neuronal uptake. Impramin is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. in India. This drug is widely used in medical practice to treat various depressive conditions.

Impramine is available in the form of 25 mg tablets and 12.5 mg/ml injection solution. Its active ingredient is imipramine. The drug is used to treat depressive states of various etiologies, including asthenodepressive syndrome, depression, depressive states in psychopathy and neuroses, as well as functional enuresis in children.

However, before using Impramin, contraindications must be taken into account. It is not recommended to prescribe the drug in case of hypersensitivity to its components, coronary heart disease, tachycardia, congestive heart failure, early post-infarction period, hepatic-renal failure, tendency to seizures, schizophrenia, epilepsy, glaucoma, prostate adenoma, bladder atony, pregnancy and children under 2 years of age.

Impramin may have side effects such as headache, dizziness, incoordination, sleep disturbance, agitation, hallucinations, sedation, paresthesia, tremor, convulsions, dysarthria, dry mouth, constipation, hepatitis, tachycardia, arrhythmia, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, accommodation disturbance, leukocytosis or leukopenia, agranulocytosis, gynecomastia, galactorrhea, decreased libido, impotence, weight gain, photosensitivity, hair loss, fever and hyperhidrosis.

Particular attention should be paid to the interaction of Impramin with other drugs. Anticholinergics, phenothiazines and benzodiazepines enhance the sedative and central anticholinergic activity of Impramin. The drug also reduces the effectiveness of phenytoin. The simultaneous use of Impramin with alcohol and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) is not recommended.

In case of an overdose of Impramine, serious consequences may occur, including seizures, cardiac arrhythmias and coma. If you suspect an overdose, you should immediately seek medical help.

In general, Impramin is an effective antidepressant, but its use should be under the supervision of a physician, taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient and following the recommendations for dosage and contraindications. You should never start or stop taking Impramin without consulting your doctor.
