Intervertebral

Intervertebral (inter vertebralis; inter- + lat. vertebra vertebra) is a term denoting the location between the vertebrae.

Intervertebral discs are located between the vertebrae of the spine and perform a shock-absorbing function, softening shocks during movements and loads on the spine. They consist of cartilage tissue and have good elasticity.

Also called intervertebral are the nerves that pass between the vertebrae. They branch from the spinal nerves and innervate the muscles and other tissues between the vertebrae.

Intervertebral joints are joints between adjacent vertebrae that provide mobility to the spine.

Thus, intervertebral is a general term for the structures located between the vertebrae of the spine.
