Today, scientists know over 100 different strains of the papilloma virus. The type of pathogen directly affects the location of the neoplasm. As a rule, strains 13 and 32 are responsible for growths in the oral cavity.

These benign tumors can affect different parts of the mouth:

  1. Language. This organ is most susceptible to epithelial hyperplasia. It looks like small grains or single tubercles on the surface of the tongue. Usually the tip of the organ, the lateral zones, and sometimes the root are affected. The color of papillomas varies from pinkish to scarlet.
  2. Throat. Such growths look like pink or flesh-colored bumps that are rough to the touch. Most often, papillomas in the mouth appear on the tonsils.
  3. Larynx. Formations on this organ are considered the most unpleasant, as they can represent an obstacle to the normal breathing process. Most often, this type occurs in young children.
  4. Lip. Papillomas on the lip, as well as in the mouth, are considered the most inconvenient from a cosmetic point of view. In addition, the growth of such growths can interfere with normal facial expressions and eating.
  5. Gum. Such neoplasms are usually not diagnosed by the patient independently for a long time. As a rule, they are discovered at a dentist's appointment.

Most often, papillomas are found on the upper palate, on the inside of the cheeks, gums, and tongue. Less commonly, growths are found in the throat and larynx.

Initially, the neoplasms are single. Over time, the virus spreads in the oral cavity and multiple mucosal lesions appear. In particularly advanced cases, papillomas grow over the entire mouth, tonsils and throat.

There are different types of papillomas in the mouth:

  1. Epithelial hyperplasia. Soft, small, mobile growths of a red hue. Most often the lateral areas of the tongue are affected.
  2. Simple (vulgar) papilloma. A mobile neoplasm of a spherical shape on a flat base. Usually forms on the soft part of the palate.
  3. Flat papillomas. They are usually localized on the gums. Such papillomas in the human mouth have a rough, granular surface. They do not differ in color from the mucous membrane.
  4. Filiform papillomas. Growths on a thin elongated stalk. They can be easily injured due to their fragility.
  5. Pointed papillomas (condylomas). Most often they merge into groups and have a lumpy, rough surface. Transmitted only through sexual contact.
