Candidiasis of Skin Folds

Skin fold candidiasis is a fungal infection of the skin caused by the Candida fungus. It is also called intertriginous candidiasis.

This disease occurs in folds of the skin where it is warm and moist. Most often the armpits, groin area, area under the breasts, and abdominal folds are affected.

The reason is the excessive proliferation of Candida fungi, which are naturally present on human skin and mucous membranes. Factors contributing to the development of candidiasis of skin folds:

  1. excessive sweating
  2. obesity
  3. diabetes
  4. taking antibiotics
  5. weakened immune system

Symptoms include itching, redness and flaking of the skin in folds. Wetting and small cracks may appear.

Diagnosis is based on the clinical picture and laboratory testing with Gram stain.

Treatment includes topical application of antifungal drugs, as well as careful skin care - keeping the folds dry and clean. In severe cases, antifungal tablets are prescribed.

Prevention consists of observing personal hygiene rules, controlling chronic diseases, and rational use of antibiotics.
