Canesten: an antifungal agent based on clotrimazole

Canesten is a drug used to treat fungal infections of the urogenital area, skin and nails. The active substance of Canesten, clotrimazole, is a derivative of imidazole and triazole. The drug is available in various dosage forms: solution with a spray, solution for external use, cream, ointment, vaginal tablets and powder.

Kanesten is produced by several companies, including Bayer AG from Germany, Polf from Poland and Egis Pharmaceutical Plant from Hungary. This drug has many synonyms, such as Amyclone, Lotrimin, Facto and others.

Canesten is used for the treatment of urogenital candidiasis caused by Candida albicans, erythrasma, dermatophytosis caused by Malassezia furfur, athlete's foot, inguinal athlete's foot, paronychia, dermatomycosis of smooth skin, skin folds, beard, mustache, scalp caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, pityriasis versicolor, mycoses complicated by secondary pyoderma. In addition, vaginal tablets, vaginal gel and cream are used to treat genital infections caused by Candida or Trichomonas vaginalis fungi, as well as to sanitize the birth canal before childbirth.

Canesten has several contraindications, including hypersensitivity, pregnancy and lactation. Various side effects may occur during use, including local reactions, allergic reactions and others. Avoid contact of the drug with the mucous membrane of the eyes and areas with impaired skin integrity. If there is no clinical improvement within 4 weeks, a microbiological study should be performed to confirm the diagnosis and exclude another cause of the disease.
