Diplomyelia is a congenital division of the spinal cord into two parts. This is a rare neurological disease in which the development of the spinal cord occurs in the early stages of the embryonic period.

With diplomyelia, complete or partial duplication of the spinal cord is observed. This leads to disruption of the conduction of nerve impulses and motor functions. Symptoms of the disease appear immediately after birth and include muscle weakness, limb deformities, and dysfunction of the pelvic organs.

Diagnosis of diplomyelia is based on medical history, clinical picture and magnetic resonance imaging results. Treatment is mainly symptomatic and includes physiotherapy, massage, and wearing orthopedic devices. A complete cure is impossible, but early initiation of rehabilitation can improve the quality of life of patients.
